Pits-in-Pits

Operators tell us that pits-in-pits are their number one concern.

Pipeline operators consistently rank pits-in-pits as a top integrity threat to their pipelines, yet most pipeline integrity assessment methods can’t detect these anomalies effectively. Ultra-High Resolution (UHR) ILI technology from ENTEGRA® enables better visualization of these potentially critical areas of corrosion, while our experienced analysts make sense of the meaning behind the data, so you can make more informed and cost-effective decisions.

What are Pits-in-Pits?

Pits-in-pits are a special kind of complex corrosion, where deeper pinhole-shaped anomalies are embedded within larger areas of shallow metal loss. UHR ILI from ENTEGRA is capable of seeing these anomalies in greater detail to reveal their true complexity, allowing us to detect and characterize individual embedded pinhole anomalies down to 3 mm in size.

Here, we zoom in to the area of the yellow box to create the profile of pits-in-pits along the long seam, with a 3D profile rendered below.

The robust technology deployed on our advanced UHR ILI tools is always examined by our experienced data analysis teams, to put anomalies like these into context with your operational specifics. With a more detailed understanding of pits-in-pits, you can choose an effective course of action to manage your pipeline integrity, whether that’s adding an area to a watchlist or scheduling a timely repair.

It is crucial to have the right technology, and the right team, on your side when approaching these potentially consequential anomalies.
